Happy Halloween!

Not much on the medical front to report for the past few days.  Gradual progress is still being made to transition Adela off the TPN to just Elecare.  She is in a much better mood and has enough strength to walk around the whole hospital floor almost twice today and still have energy to play in the playroom.

Now, on to the fun stuff…Happy Halloween!  Halloween is Adela’s favorite holiday and we have been worried about how it would work out if we were still in the Hospital on October 31st.  As it turned out, Adela had one of her best days since we checked in.  Her room has been decorated with Halloween decorations for two weeks and she has been getting into the Halloween spirit by reading Halloween books, watching It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and doing Halloween arts and crafts.  Last night, we fixed up our pumpkins for her room.  We decided against carving real pumpkins (figured the hospital staff might not appreciate pumpkin guts all over the room), so we used fake pumpkins and the Mr. Potato Head-like pieces they make for pumpkins to create a witch and a pirate.  And, if you look at the pictures closely, you’ll see that the pirate must have been injured in a perilous pumpkin duel…he has a g-tube, IV, and broviac catheter just like Adela (well, Adela doesn’t have the IV anymore, but close enough).  She decided to dress up as a little white totoro this year…it’s a forest spirit from her favorite movie, My Neighbor Totoro.  With Mommy and Nana’s help, she put together Halloween treat bags for all the kids on our floor.  So this afternoon, we went “reverse trick-or-treating”.  She walked around the floor behind her red wagon and handed out treat bags to everyone.  She was actually more excited about that than she has been in past years about going regular trick-or-treating.  This morning we had a visit from Auntie Amy and Nana and Grandaddy were here all day as well.  This afternoon, we had a visit from Adela’s cousin, Nina (and Aunt Monika).  Nina walked with Adela while she delivered the bags, watched It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and went upstairs to the playroom to play together. We all had fun playing hide-and-seek around the playroom.
